The Moreton Hall Wish List

What facilities and services would you, the residents of Moreton Hall, like to see develop within your community?

Garden Allotments?

A café in the heart of Moreton Hall?

A part-time library?

A farmers market?

More park benches in public spaces for older people to be able to sit and rest?

As ever, Moreton Hall is expanding, in terms of houses, facilities, services AND businesses. As far as I am aware, the housing developments will not extend much further than they are now. Lawsons place and Mount Farm are developing into a real community core, what with a doctors surgery, a pub, a community centre, a church, THE NEW YOUTH CLUB due to open this month, and then the news of a new dental practice too. Wow – it really is starting to look like a town. Businesses are also attracted to the area, and the industrial estate is expanding too, providing you with even more services. It occurred to me, that with all this growth and all of these opportunities, it would be really worthwhile to publicly report on what you, the residents, need and would like to see in your community.

So this month sees the launch of The Moreton Hall Wish List. I have already received some feedback, to kick start the list which is listed at the start of this article. Please add your own wish, and/or your support for one already placed – by commenting below.

In future editions of the magazine I will publish the wish list as it stands – and try to provide an insight into how popular each wish is. Naturally I can’t be responsible for granting your wishes – I may have a wand – but as yet, I haven’t attended magic school. I can however ensure that your wishes are published – and that the complete wish list is forwarded to the council. So please do pretend I’m a genie for now, and bombard me with your wishes – you never know how much magic a community can generate if everyone comes together.

Yes please to some benches for older people, especially at the PO end of the path from Mount Road. That is my first wish. Second is a library, third a farmers market.

I agree with all that, especially the cafe. I'd like to add a deli and a better telephone exchange so we can get proper broadband (more than 512k).

How about a deli and a better telephone exchange so we can get broadband faster than 512k?

All good ideas so far, though I do hear that the empty unit next to the pharmacy is destined to be a fish 'n chip & Greek food take-away. How about a water feature/paddling pool for the summer? Saw a super & well-used one in Newnham, Cambridge.
My husband endorses the idea of allotments.

How about a parent and child parking space outside the Post Office / Community Centre. I often have a 3-year old, a baby and several bulky packages to carry into the Post Office and very often cannot got parked near enough. Have almost driven away a couple of times.

How about some acceptable artwork on the walls of the underpass / bridge which connects Lawson Place with St James Park. The council keeping having to paint over the graffitti, how about appraoching the local teenagers to create a mural which depicts life on our estate? Perhaps run it as a competition and then hopefully they wil nort feel it necessary to graffitti over work created by their peers.

Train station with car parking
Large recreational field needed to accommodate several families, not just one or two families.
New Middle and Upper school.
More seats in green areas, not just in childrens play areas.
Visible litter bins in main green areas, not just in todler play areas. Small shop Abbotsford Park

There are many good ideas so far raised for this wish list. Although we have Tesco, why not have a bread shop with cafe like Bakers Oven in Abbeygate Street. Many times I have spoken to my neighbours while standing in the street, a cafe would be a good place to sit and have coffee and a chat. If Bakers Oven did come to Moreton Hall surely that would be healthier than the fish 'n' Chip shop plus it could provide residents with freshly baked bread instead of the cakes and danishes that Tesco sell. Also benches are very muchly needed along Symonds Road for the elderly which I also endorse.

Thank you all very much for your comments. Its great to see so many positive contributions coming through. A new list will be published in the next edition of The Moreton Hall Directory - let's keep it rolling...

I love all these ideas. It would be also great to have a bench at the top of the cycle way that connects The Moreton Hall pub and the new bit of Abbotsford Park.

On the arty side, it would be great to have a sculpture trail to create an interesting walk around Moreton Hall ~ perhaps it could be something that the schoolchildren could work on.

Also, I'd love to see some welcome signs, like village signs, on the approaches to Moreton Hall.

Firstly, Congratulations on the Directory which I look forward to reading each month. Regarding the Wish List I think a Farmers Market would be beneficial also a few benches for people to sit as they walk about our lovely area.My main wish is for someone to cut the grass in the meadow next to the Prep School in Simmonds Road. We used to have a fantastic display of our wild cowslips which were a joy to see. Unfortunately they were choked by weeds and long grass this spring and will not stand a chance next year unless it is cut back in the autumn. Good luck with the Wish List Eileen Hutchings. 16 Browse Close, Moreton Hall.

What about a bi-annual scarecrow festival like that have at some of the villages? This would be a great community exhibition that could also involve the children.
